Lorraine has worked for over 35 years in the disabled people’s movement, most recently as Chief Executive of Breakthrough UK Ltd: she is now semi-retired, doing mostly policy work. Lorraine had polio as a young child, uses a powered wheelchair, and is married with two grown children.
Lorraine has an interesting background: having trained originally in fashion design and management she has worked in the private sector, in local government, and in disabled people’s organisations. She has sat on three Ministerial Advisory Groups and was subsequently awarded the MBE. As a young woman she was a competitive swimmer in the Paralympics, both nationally and internationally.
Having had diabetes over 20 years, Lorraine had a heart attack three years ago, leading to her retirement from Breakthrough and to a life of balancing medical professionals and trying to get them to talk to each other.
